Me, Myself & Irene Cover Art

I have seen just about every Jim Carrey comedy that has come out in the theaters and most of them I found pretty downright funny as hell. Working with the Farrelly Brothers for the first time since Dumb and Dumber, Jim Carrey is hoping to strike gold once again. Sadly, Me, Myself & Irene falls short.

Me, Myself & Irene stars Jim Carrey as Charlie, a Rhode Island state policeman. Shortly after marrying his high school sweetheart, she leaves him for the limo driver from their wedding. This is the start of Charlie bottling up his feelings. One day, Charlie finally snaps and his split personality, Hank, comes out. The total opposite of Charlie, Hank speaks his mind and doesn?t take anyones crap, like Charlie does.

After the recognition of his disorder, Charlie is ordered to take it easy and is assigned a cupcake job, taking a prisoner back to New York for questioning. Shortly after dropping off his prisoner, Irene (Renee Zellweger), there is a failed attempt to kill her. She runs off and seeks the help of Charlie.

Charlie and Hank both take their turn trying to help her outrun the people trying to kill her. Along the way, both Charlie and Hank try and win her over as well.
Carrey and Zellweger really do have a great chemistry with each other and given their romantic link during the filming of the movie, as well as shortly after the movie was completed; it probably made it all the more real. Jim Carrey really did a fine job playing two characters and switching between them at the drop of a hat. Zellweger held her own in this comedy with providing Carrey with some nice setups.

Chemistry aside, the movie was really not all that funny. The foul language and crude references were really over the top and at many times, unnecessary. I am no prude mind you, but there just comes a point when enough is enough and trying to force the funny isn?t going to help any.

Video

The 1080p high definition, 1.85:1 transfer is really not up to the high definition standards one would expect. Many of the Fox releases have been absolutely stellar. Me, Myself & Irene has an ok look about it but nothing that makes itself stand out. The picture is different from scene to scene. It can go from soft to clear to grainy and back again. Overall, it is a very substandard release by Fox.

Audio

Three audio choices come with this Blu Ray release. You have the choice of DTS HD 5.1 Master Lossless, along with French 5.1 Dolby and Spanish 2.0. English, Spanish, Cantonese and Korean subtitles are also available

Of course, I watched it with the DTS audio. Aside from when music is being played, the majority of the film is center channel. The audio here is not bad at all, except for a couple of instances. Although dialogue is fine, when the ?change of Charlie to Hank? music plays it is pretty static filled, at least to my ears. Other music is fine but that one particular track is just horrendous.

Special Features

As it sadly seems to be the norm with a lot of Blu Ray catalog releases, this one is pretty bare bones.

  • Commentary with The Farrelly Brothers
  • Deleted Scenes with Optional director commentary

Final Thoughts

I really tried to find the movie funny. Mind you, there were a few times I did laugh, but not as much as I expected. There are plenty of better Jim Carrey movies and better Farrelly Brother films as well. As far as if I would recommend this release, based on the subpar transfer, the decent audio, and the not so great movie and high MSRP, I would have to say give this one a rent.
