For decades there has been some speculation about a certain Scottish loch and the prehistoric creature or creatures that might inhabit the deep waters. There have been a few pictures, most if not all proven as fakes over the years, depicting something akin to a Plesiosaur. The creature appears to have a long neck and a large body supported by fin-like appendages. By now the Loch Ness Monster, or Nessie, as it is often called, is a staple of modern mythology. Whether truth or fiction, the small Scottish countryside has made a bit of a cottage industry from the fabled creature. Of course, it is as children that we are the most fascinated with such things. There’s that age when we’re apt to believe almost anything, especially if we want it to be true enough. Water horse: Legend Of The Deep is directed at just such an audience, purporting to unveil the true story of the Loch Ness Monster. Continue Reading

I have to give Eli Roth some deserved credit here. With the success of his disturbing Hostel, there must have been an incredible temptation to deliver merely more of the same and be content with raking in the millions without actually having to work for it. Money For Nothing, as the song goes. The risk here is that the frenzied fans of the original would leave this film somewhat disappointed, as I imagine many were. That’s not to say that Hostel Part II doesn’t contain some very Hostel-like moments of torture and gore, but it’s safe to say this film is not nearly as gratuitous as the first. Instead Roth decided to bring us a far more developed story this time around. We get far more insight into the Club and how it works. Continue Reading

Here’s the thing. You’ve got Halle Berry. You’ve got Bruce Willis. How could you go wrong with a combination like that? I don’t know about the women, but the guys are all over this one. We get the cool action star and some nice eye candy. Add to that that both of them have some serious acting chops, and you have yourself a winner. The story has all kinds of potential. It’s a classic whodunit with some clever twists and turns along the way to keep you guessing. What could possibly go wrong. Perfect Stranger, that’s what can go wrong. Continue Reading

This is the third of the Jack Ryan films and the only one of the four to have any kind of continuity with any of the other films. It follows closely on the heels of Patriot Games and uses much of the same cast and crew as that film did. Finally it seemed that Paramount was willing to establish some kind of a franchise with stability on the popular Tom Clancy character. While this was still not as good as Hunt For Red October, it is easily superior to any of the other Ryan sequels. Harrison Ford is put to far better use here and he finally appears comfortable in the skin of Ryan. The film requires many huge leaps in logic, making it less believable than, perhaps, Patriot Games, but the action mixed with a generous amount of suspense makes this a rather fun and interesting story to watch.
