Hot off the release of Saturday Night Fever, John Travolta made his way back into the spotlight with his dance moves; this time with the inclusion of a great singing voice and a high school backdrop in 1959. While the film itself was actually released in 1978, it is based upon the Broadway play of the same name from 1972. While some minor elements have changed in the transition, the film remains quite true to the original production and has garnered quite a following since its release over 30 years ago. Cast alongside Travolta are Olivia Newton John, Stockard Channing, and Jeff Conaway all playing memorable roles, but with the release of so many great musicals in the modern age can Grease really hold up? It’s no secret that I really enjoyed the original Wayne’s World, it was an instant classic some 20 years ago, and is still my favorite Saturday Night Live film. But let’s face it, with the exception of Terminator 2 it’s extremely difficult to find a sequel that can eclipse the original. While Wayne’s World was never a masterpiece the bar isn’t set extremely high to overlap, ultimately all we could hope for is some more of the same without being exactly the same. Surprisingly released just a year after the original Wayne’s World quickly wanted to capitalize on the success of the original, while it didn’t draw as much attention in the box office, how does it sit in our minds? While to some this nostalgic flick of SNL‘s (Saturday Night Lives) better days has been lost in the archives of time, I have been hoping that it would someday see the shelf of my Blu-ray collection. Let’s face it, love it or hate it Wayne’s World is a classic and its intently sarcastic tone has delivered some classic lines and moments. While Wayne’s World wasn’t the first SNL sketch to make its way to the big screen it was the first to receive mostly positive reviews and actually gross a very respectable amount of money. Spawning a sequel and even video games, and propelling Bohemian Rhapsody back into the Billboard charts, it’s hard to deny the status of Wayne’s World as a classic in the comedy archives. Arousing curiosity from me at the Golden Globes where I’ve Loved you So Long was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Actress, It’s about time I get to actually watch this film. Very rarely do foreign films disappoint me, and one with so much nominations and awards to boot. While I’ve Loved you So Long didn’t take home the awards for the aforementioned nominations there is a general consensus that the film did in fact earn its place at the Globes. Continue Reading

Not Easily Broken didn’t make a blip on many people’s radars back in January when it was released, grossing just over 10 million dollars. In its defense it did double its budget, and only saw a release spanning slightly over 700 theaters. I like to think I’m a fan of indie films, but I get more and more surprised every time a movie like this comes my way and I’d never gotten wind of it previously. Frankly more often than not I wish these movies hadn’t found their way to me, but it’s worth it to find that diamond in the rough every now and then. Based upon the novel of the same name, Not Easily Broken makes its way onto Blu-ray directed by Bill Duke and starring Morris Chestnut and Taraji P. Henson. Continue Reading

Valkyrie was the subject of a bit of bad press prior to its release. Many in Germany were not happy with fact that the movie was being made on their soil as Germany has rather strict laws against displays of Nazi symbols and the glorification of the Nazi regime. Accordingly, there was a lot of pressure within Germany to prevent the filming of Valkyrie on German soil even though the film does not glorify or promote the Nazi cause one bit and is, in fact, a story about a group of brave Germans who gave their lives in an attempt to topple the Nazi regime during the war. Diana Krall: Live in Paris is one of my favorite music DVDs, not just because of an incredible musical performance by Diana and her fellow musicians, but because of a fantastic DTS audio track which was among the best DVD musical tracks I have had the pleasure to listen to. While the video on Live in Paris was problematic, the audio and musical performances were so good that I could easily ignore the flaws with the video. When I learned that a new concert performances featuring the same backing band was being issued and on Blu-ray with a DTS HD Master Audio track, I was excited to get my hands on one to see if it could best the Live in Paris release. Earlier today, my brother-in-law and I went to the theater to see the new Star Trek film. I have never been a Trekkie, but both of us were quite pleased with the film. Knowing I would be watching this movie called Things We Lost in the Fire later today, I was having a difficult time getting motivated to put on my review hat after watching the action-packed Star Trek. Was I really going to follow up that bit of adrenaline with this possible cure for insomnia? That was not to be the case. By the end of the day, it turned out to be a positive experience for my Sunday double-feature. Continue Reading
