Making one movie at a time is tough enough. But to essentially make two movies at a time and then combine them into one unified picture must be a daunting task, even with a common subject matter. Such is the case with the subject of today’s film, Julie & Julia, which was a lot better than I expected it to be. Having the great Meryl Streep playing a central role in the picture sure did help! When people think of Godzilla, they think of a scary monster of epic proportions, when I think of 1998′s Godzilla, my memory triggers similar thoughts. Godzilla is a terribly made (to the point of it being scary) film of epic proportions (AKA a running time of 139 minutes which is scary as well). Continue Reading

Horror films have been a big part of movie making since its earliest days, nothing is more exciting than going into a movie and letting your imagination run away with implausible horrors that still make you wonder… what if? In the early 1900′s it was Dracula, Nosferatu, Frankenstein, The Phantom of the Opera, etc. The thought of such villains lurking around in our world could really get our hearts racing. Then mid century the thrills started to change. Terrestrial horrors, demonic plague, and of course end of times. Legends like Vincent Price and Alfred Hitchcock made their way into our imaginations, finding new ways to leave us startled. Continue Reading

Words cannot vividly express how honored and excited I am to be the recipient of the following Blu-ray disc and also to be selected to furnish a review of it. It’s literally a dream come true for me. To declare the following manuscript of confabulation a mere Blu-ray review would simply be misleading. Instead, think of it as a testament, according to the Book of Brian, to one of the greatest films ever made. “Clever, savagely witty and dark” are the catch phrase terms that Fox Public Relations people refer to Fight Club as. However, I prefer to think of it more as an imperial cultural phenomenon of modern times than as a 10-year film being released on the Blu-ray optical format for the first time. If I seem like I am embellishing, then that’s because I am. The 2 hour and 19 minute world of Fight Club is one of the most intellectual and eye opening experiences this 30+ year-old man boy has every encountered in life. It metaphorically removed the blinders I had donned my entire life and woke me up to other possibilities and alternate realities that I seem to have always neglected in my life and/or never really bothered to experience. And I owe it all to my friend Erin. C’mon! Let’s find out why. Continue Reading

One must wonder when enough is enough when it comes to movie franchises like the Terminator series. Despite the most ardent of fans, the general public eventually becomes tired of all move franchises. That was even the case with the Star Trek movie franchise. Even a fine final film with the Next Generation cast went nowhere as did the Enterprise TV series despite the last two seasons which were excellent. Continue Reading

Angel Heart was a great representation of neo-noir, however it’s also a film that weds both horror and mystery together in a way that is both unique and very entertaining. Showcasing Mickey Rourke’s young talent and having one of De Niro’s more eclectic performances, does Angel Heart rise above the abundant horror thrillers of its time or does it go over the top? Lets see… Continue Reading

Often times, turning an extremely popular book into a film is a daunting task. The book is often times filled with so much detail that to include most of it will lead to a rather slow and ponderous film. I am amazed at how well they have been able to translate the Harry Potter books into so many successful films given how dense the books are. Another author of extremely dense books is Dan Brown. We all know Tinker Bell as the inspirational fairy who stood alongside Peter Pan with motivational support and knowledge. Well since her original conception she has quite literally taken on wings of her own spawning her own line of books, plays, video games, TV shows, and yes even her own movies. Really she needs no introduction, but can this buzzing side kick really carry her own movie? Preceded by 2008′s self titled Tinker Bell, Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue made its way straight to DVD and Blu ray with respectable cast of voice actors. With a third installment already planned this sequel can’t be all that bad, right? Continue Reading

What were they thinking? That was the phrase that was running through my head as I was watching the subject of today’s review, Four Christmases. Every now and then a film comes out that has a great cast but is so bad that you have to wonder why the cast members and in particular, the stars, didn’t walk away as soon as they read the script. Four Christmases is just one of those films. Continue Reading

Cujo used to haunt my dreams… There I said it! Having to review this movie really hurt my inner-child emotionally. I remember all those years ago, saying “Don’t worry, you’ll never have to watch that lame movie again”. Years later we’re celebrating the 25th anniversary and here I am reviewing the Blu-ray release of the cult classic based off of a story by Stephen King. Let’s see how Cujo holds up after a quarter of a decade. Continue Reading

I can’t really say that I am a fan of your typical chick flick. Occasionally, you come across one that is funny enough to enjoy. However, I can’t really recall ever having seen a chick flick with an aggressive and somewhat nasty edge until I had a chance to see the subject of today’s review, The Ugly Truth, which takes chick flicks to a new and thankfully, higher level. As a life long resident of the Philadelphia area, I must say that I enjoy the TV series, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Yes it is crude and disgusting and often paints the City in a bad light and is filled with some of the dumbest and most disagreeable characters imaginable. However, regardless of how crude it can get, it is almost always hilarious. In keeping with the season, the gang is back with a Christmas special which arrived this week on Blu-ray. I was anxious to give it a spin. Continue Reading
