Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast

There is no question that Beauty and the Beast was an eagerly awaited title when Disney announced their support for the Blu-ray format. That eagerness was understandable, given that Beauty and the Beast is a great film and involved some what was at the time, considered at the time, rather revolutionary animation techniques. Well, Beauty and the Beast is on its way to Blu-ray and I can assure you that it was worth the wait, well worth the wait. Continue Reading

Deep Blue Sea

Deep Blue Sea

Remember back in the day when having Samuel L. Jackson’s name in the credits instantly legitimized a movie?  Before he was fighting snakes on a plane and dawning an eye path and playing Nick Fury, Sam Jackson was enjoying small roles in a variety of films to expand his horizons… Does Deep Blue Sea showcase a prime example of a fanciful premise that is enhanced by having “the man” in it… or is this the beginning of the end for Sammy?

Open House (2010)

Open House (2010)

Having a significant other who’s obsessed with True Blood, made this flick an easy sell when it came down to review time. Out of all the fans of the show out there, who can resist seeing both Anna Paquin AND Stephen Moyer on the cover of a semi-legitimate horror film and not go crazy and rush home to watch it? Does Open House deliver to the obvious target audience or does it stay on the market?

Elvis on Tour (Elvis Blu-ray Collection)

Elvis on Tour (Elvis Blu-ray Collection)

As a long-time listener to Elvis’ music, I was extremely excited to view the Golden Globe winning film, Elvis on Tour.  Furthermore, Elvis earned his great reputation as a live artist, and I was greatly looking forward to seeing the type of legendary performer we no longer see.

However, I did go into this with some trepidation, as this was not the Elvis of “Comeback Special” fame – this was the jumpsuit-cladded, sideburn-toting, kung-fu kicking Elvis of the 1970’s.  Was there still enough charisma and talent left to carry a whole concert film, or was this the pale echoes of a once legendary performer?  Continue Reading

Viva Las Vegas (Elvis Blu-Ray Collection)

Viva Las Vegas (Elvis Blu-Ray Collection)

Although I have enjoyed the music of Elvis since being a wee lad (and even being known for performing Suspicious Minds occasionally at Karaoke), it was very odd that I had never sat down and watched an Elvis movie.

My impression of the films was that they were fluff pieces, that Elvis wasn’t really much of an actor, and that they were really “teen exploitation” films (the logical successors of which include The Hannah Montana Movie).  So it was with some amusement that I sat down to watch Viva Las Vegas, curious to see just exactly what an Elvis film was. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

I guess you could say that I am not a big fan of video games which is not surprising given my “advanced” age. My teenage sons sure do so I guess it is one of those generational things. I just don’t see the point. I have been even a lesser fan of movies based on video games, not because of the fact that I haven’t played the game the film is based on but because the films tend to be action films with plenty of action but no plot. Would the subject of this review, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, turn out to be different? Continue Reading
