I am a self-professed animated film junkie. Wall•E was my favorite film from last year, edging out many of the fan favorites, so The Tale of Despereaux should be right in my wheelhouse, right?  Like many of its counterparts these days, it has a loveable main character, a cast of star voice actors and a slew of slick visuals, so it should be a success… right? It turns out that isn’t the case.  Despite everything Despereaux has going for it, the film is less than the sum of its parts.  Fans and critics agreed – Desperaux took in less than $51 million in U.S. markets and suffered mixed reviews.  It’s not all bad though; this film is definitely nice to look at.  Read on for the full breakdown of the details. I don’t know exactly what it is, but I have a definite affinity for first person point of view movies.  From Cloverfield to The Blair Witch Project, I’ve found that watching a thriller from the perspective of someone in peril has a way of plugging you right in to the drama.  Although it’s not going to serve as reference material, this is no Blair Witch in terms of video quality.  It’s definitely easier on the eyes.  If you can get past the initial shock of the bouncy shots and long refocusing periods, you’ll find a high-tension thriller that will likely have you on the edge of your seat throughout.  You might even want to open a few windows before you get started, just to escape that claustrophobic feeling… Continue Reading
