Southland Tales

Southland Tales Cover Art

Did you ever watch a movie and wonder when it was over what it was you just watched? Have you ever been so enthralled in something but at the same time stupefied by it? These are just a couple of the assorted thoughts that ran through my head after my initial viewing of the film Southland Tales, a recent Blu-ray release from Sony Pictures. I believe it would take me several sequential viewings to truly comprehend the complex body of work that is Southland Tales, but even then, I question whether or not that would be enough. I don’t even know how to explain it. I have never been so interested in watching something but so lost at the same time. Read the rest of this entry »

Stuck

Stuck Cover Art

When I first found out that I would be reviewing the Blu-ray movie, Stuck, I did some quick research on the web. After reading about the premise of the movie and how it was somewhat based on actual events, I was able to recall hearing the factual news story years ago. I remember being amazed and intrigued by what really happened. That is why I was really excited and looking forward to seeing what Stuck had to offer me. I went in with no hopes or expectations. I just wanted to be entertained and enthralled. Read the rest of this entry »

Batman Begins

Batman Begins Cover Art

Before I begin (no pun intended), I need a quick moment to reflect upon a disclaimer I need to make. If it were not for on-screen onslaught of The Dark Knight, I don’t think I would have given Batman Begins the much needed respect and appreciation it deserves. I think I need to be brutally honest here for a moment. Batman Begins is an origin story so if you have not seen it, do not go in with the expectations that it is going to be one of the greatest high-adrenaline action movies you have ever seen because you will be greatly disappointed. Instead, you need to appreciate the movie for what it really is. What is that, you might ask? It is a slick vehicle to introduce to the world who the Batman really is. Read the rest of this entry »

Constantine

Constantine Coverart

Keanu Reeves has come a long way since the days of Bill & Ted. He really came into his own when given the part of Neo in The Matrix. The film Constantine suits him well as the character is very dark, with not too much emotion. This seems to be the type of character he is used to playing in many of his recent films, including the up coming The Day the Earth Stood Still. Constantine is a film full of action, drama and some scares, which is all a good thing and really is a thrill ride kind of a film. Read the rest of this entry »

Wild China

Wild China Cover Art

The arrival of Blu-ray and high definition home video has had an enormous effect on the documentary industry. Suddenly cinematographers can bring us to the most remote reaches of our globe and even beyond, and they can do so with such detail and sharpness it’s like opening a window to these once unreachable places. Wild China is a perfect example of this ability. With incredible HD equipment, this mini-series from the BBC brings the hidden realms of China into our living rooms. Read the rest of this entry »

Sin City (Canadian Import)

Sin City Cover Art

Back in 2005, Sin City was one of those DVD movies I bought as a blind purchase, and coincidentally, the first movie I ever watched on my brand new 50” Sony LCD rear projection HDTV at the time. I remember just being completely mesmerized by the movie’s unique, and at the time, revolutionary coloring process. The majority of the film is rendered in black and white but contains certain color palettes to emphasize specific objects and scenes. I was really taken aback by this as I am usually just into the cookie-cutter kind of traditional color looking films and not often moved by artistic attempts at being different. The Omen Collection

The Omen Collection Cover Art

Looking back over the last twenty or even thirty years of horror films, we’ve been on a downward slope with the occasional spike of decency. In a market filled with remakes, blood and guts, and redundancy, there’s a bit of solace thinking back on movies like The Omen. An undeniable favorite in the Christian end times corner of the horror universe. Packaged along with Richard Donner’s classic are two sequels and a remake, will they follow the overall downward trend? Or are we going to see a spike, maybe even a spark in inventive and horrific film making? Read the rest of this entry »

Interview with the Vampire

Interview with the Vampire Cover Art

Bathing in blood and dominating Romania some six centuries ago, I assure you Vlad the Impailer would never have guessed his legacy would live on in this light. Rooting back to Bram Stoker’s original novel, our imaginations have been captivated by the blood thirsty creatures of the night, based in name upon Vlad, also known as Vlad Dracula. In film there has been a real hit and miss streak with the vampire genre, usually conforming to a teenage hack and slash plot and falling short of all expectations. But there have been a few gems along the way, 1922’s Nosferatu, 1992’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula, 1931’s Dracula, and of course, the topic of this review, 1994’s Interview with the Vampire. I’m not going to beat around the bush on this one, Interview with the Vampire is probably the best Vampire movie of the past twenty years, and I’ll tell you why. Read the rest of this entry »

Halloween (2007)

Halloween Cover Art

Unlike most people, I have been waiting for Rob Zombie’s interpretation of Halloween to come out on the Blu-ray format for over a year now. Words cannot express how disappointed I was that I had to buy the Standard Definition DVD of this movie when it came out in late 2007 because there was no release date in sight for the Blu-ray format. Coincidentally, that was the last DVD I ever bought. Having always been a big Michael Myers fan, I was extra stoked that the theatrical release of this movie fell on my birthday. What a birthday that was! Could you imagine a better way to celebrate your birthday? There is no need to seriously answer that one. That is what they call a rhetorical question. I really enjoyed Rob Zombie’s eccentric visions in House of 1,000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects so I was very much looking forward to him tackling one of my all-time favorite movie villains, Michael Myers. The Replacement Killers

The Replacement Killers Cover Art

Chow Yun-Fat might not be a name known as well to those of us living in North America, at least not before the 2003 hit Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. In his native China he has been a superstar for some time, redefining the martial arts film. Today he’s almost as well known here. The Replacement Killers was his first Western film. It’s one of those moments in cinema history where many audiences left without really knowing what to make of it all. I remember the first time that I saw the film, and I still don’t know how to quite describe it. The simple explanation is that it’s a typical Asian tough guy film like we’ve seen from Jackie Chan for about 20 years now Read the rest of this entry »

RV

RV Cover Art

A family travels across the United States in an RV. Along the way they encounter all sorts of mishaps and adventures. From that short synopsis you might think I was describing the hilarious National Lampoon’s Vacation film with Chevy Chase. Unfortunately I’m not. Robin Williams, who is arguably one of the funniest comedic actors of all time, isn’t being very particular where he gets his film material from these days. In fact, I expected more out of Barry Sonnenfeld as well. When you team creative people of that caliber, you just have a right to expect more than a decidedly unfunny ripoff of a classic comedy film. Williams is certainly capable of better humor than Chevy Chase. He’s got so much more energy and delivery. Sonnenfeld is the genius who gave us things like Men In Black and the recent wickedly funny series, Pushing Daisies. Of course, he also brought us the disaster that was the Will Smith Wild Wild West film in the 90’s, so maybe we don’t have so much of a right to expect more after all. Read the rest of this entry »

The Happening

The Happening Cover Art

Not long since his last disappointing release, M. Night Shyamalan hopes to bring some credibility back to his once reputable name with The Happening. Plagued with accusations of plagiarism and labelled as a one trick pony, bringing some credibility back to the table wouldn’t be an easy feat for anyone. But we have to hand it to Shyamalan, The Sixth Sense and Signs are easily classics in their genres, I’ll even give The Village a nod. But on the flipside, out of six major releases, only two have really hit it big, bating at one third and barely making back it’s budget I’m not sure I like the odds going into this one. Daredevil

Daredevil Cover Art

I remember dragging my ex-girlfriend to see this movie in the theatre on Valentine’s Day back in 2003.  She was very surprised as she had always known me to be very anti-Ben Affleck.  With the exception of Good Will Hunting I have never been a fan of his wooden characters he portrayed or that grin he always seems to proudly display.  Maybe it is just me?  I was going to pass on this movie completely until two reasons persuaded me not to.  The first was the awesome music soundtrack.  I remember having a copy of this CD a month before the movie even came out.  It was then that I discovered the amazing lungs of Evanescence’s Amy Lee.  There are a total of two Evanescence songs playing during two key emotional moments in the movie.  The second was a referral from a friend who lives out-of-state who basically encouraged me to put my dislike for Ben Affleck aside and check this movie out for what it was… a comic book superhero movie. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest Coverart

In many cases, you won’t find Jack Nicholson in a role that is bad. He is an actor who can play just about any part thrown at him and make it his own. He has been President in Mars Attacks, a crazed out writer in The Shining and in One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Jack as McMurphy, a petty thief, hits a homerun easily in one of the most critically acclaimed films of all time. Running with Scissors

Running with Scissors Cover Art

Several weeks ago, I was given a number of Sony titles to review that were never sent to us for review. I made my choices and they were on their way to me. One of those Blu-rays was Running with Scissors. I chose it because I knew nothing about it and figured I would, without any kind of research, give it a shot. Once I got around to reviewing it, I truly wish I had chosen something else. Read the rest of this entry »

Nixon

Nixon Cover Art

“I am not a crook” said President Nixon as he vigorously defended his record in the Watergate case. This famous line would forever stain the president’s career and personal life. It’s hard to believe Watergate happened so many years ago, yet it still brings the controversy of all other legendary US cover-ups. Today I will review the film Nixon as presented for the first time on Blu-ray. Read the rest of this entry »

Eraser

Eraser Coverart

There have been plenty of great action films that have starred Arnold. He was a huge box office draw in the 90s. In the summer of 1996, Warner Brothers made a boad load of cash with Eraser. Box office money does not always indicate a great movie, mind you. Worldwide, the gross was over 220 million dollars. That is an insane amount of cash for a film where the acting is suspect, and the storyline is totally predictable. Definitely not one of Arnold’s best, not by a long shot. Perfect Stranger

Perfect Stranger Cover Art

Here’s the thing. You’ve got Halle Berry. You’ve got Bruce Willis. How could you go wrong with a combination like that? I don’t know about the women, but the guys are all over this one. We get the cool action star and some nice eye candy. Add to that that both of them have some serious acting chops, and you have yourself a winner. The story has all kinds of potential. It’s a classic whodunit with some clever twists and turns along the way to keep you guessing. What could possibly go wrong. Perfect Stranger, that’s what can go wrong. Read the rest of this entry »
