Weeds – Season Two

Having just reviewed Weeds Season One on Blu-ray it struck some curiosity on how the following seasons might play out. Luckily I have the chance to check it out now and get myself all up to date before the slated August 13th season three premier.

The second season of Weeds follows much the same formula as the first, and in case you haven’t seen the first season I suggest you do so beforehand. But for your benefit I’ll quickly run over what you’ve missed. Continue Reading

The Untouchables

The Untouchables Cover Art

Where do you start with a film like The Untouchables? I suppose you start at the beginning. This has to be the best script David Mamet has ever written. The highly stylized vision of 1930 Chicago utilizes as much of the myth as it does the fact. After all, we want our mobster dramas larger than life. For rights issues the film claims to be based on the 1959 Robert Stack television series; however, all of the participants admit the result is completely unique and original. Continue Reading

Weeds – Season One

Generally I don’t watch much on television, Weeds isn’t an exception but I will admit that having seen previews for it in the past, it did look rather interesting. Even though the biggest name I recognize from the cast list is Kevin Nealon, this dark comedy about marijuana and life in the suburbs looks to be promising. Continue Reading

Dirty Dancing

I first saw Dirty Dancing when I was in grade school via VHS with my mother and believe it or not I enjoyed the film as a 10 year-old kid. Since that time I have seen the film countless other times, whether it be on television or DVD. It is one of those films which has matured as I have matured.

Dirty Dancing is the story of headstrong 17-year-old Baby Houseman. Baby hardly expects her family’s usual summer vacation in the Catskills to be momentous. But then Baby spies Johnny Castle, the reso… Continue Reading

Ultimate Avengers Collection

The Ultimate Avengers Collection on Blu-ray consists of the two direct-to-video animated films based upon the Marvel comic book The Ultimates. For those not familiar with the comic book, I’m sure you will have heard of more than one of the films’ main characters: Captain America, Thor, Iron Man and The Hulk, to name a few. Continue Reading

Saw II

Saw II Cover Art

At the time of its release in 2005, about a year after the original Saw, I was eagerly anticipating a follow up, as I wanted many questions answered. Sequels rarely live up to their predecessors, though, and as much as I liked Saw II it didn’t quite have the same formula as the original. Saw II is more sadistic, violent, and all out more gruesome. Still, the goriness is never as over the top or random as in pictures like Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning or Hostel.  Sure the blood flows, but it never feels too forced. Continue Reading

Reservoir Dogs

Reservoir Dogs for the most part got it all started for Quentin Tarantino. This film came to us in 1992 on a tight budget of 1.4 Million dollars and completely changed Hollywood from there on. In many ways it was the Prequel to Pulp Fiction. Reservoir Dogs gave us a breath of fresh air from what Hollywood had been delivering at that time.

This film centers around a jewlery store robbery gone bad. The thiefs, a goup of guys all named after various colors are lying low in a local warehouse afte… Continue Reading

Crank

I’ve always maintained that actor Jason Statham is one of those actors that can turn any ridiculous film into a film that is still ridiculous, but damn entertaining to watch. Such is the case with the two Transporter films, which are two films that aren’t really “good” per say, but rather entertaining as all hell. Statham’s recent film Crank is another pure example, as the film isn’t really Oscar material, but sure knows how to keep us tuned in for its brief 87 minute length. Continue Reading

Rambo: First Blood

Rambo: First Blood was a movie that went to a place where movies had not gone to before. It is the first time in cinematic history where a Vietnam Veteran took to his own country, albeit it was deserved. Continue Reading

Black Rain

Let’s face it, they don’t make action movies like they used to, instead now we are bombarded with special effects and explosions so I was pleased to be able to watch a movie that came from an era of superb action pictures. Starring Michael Douglas, Andy Garcia, and Ken Takakura, Black Rain seemed pretty promising going on, how does it stack up compared to the heavy hitting action movies of the late 80′s/early 90′s? We Were Soldiers

The first time Mel Gibson and Randall Wallace got together they put out an epic film (Braveheart), which is a personal all time favorite, so my expectations were pretty high going into this film. Based upon the book We Were Soldiers Once And Young by Hal Moore and Joseph Galloway, the movie depicts the struggles of American Forces in Vietnam, both on the field and their coping families back home. Saw III

I’m not usually the guy to go to for opinions on horror films as I almost always stay away from them (not because I don’t like being scared but rather because horror films aren’t what they use to be anymore). So what about Saw III forced me to see this one? Well I found the first two films (particularly the second) enjoyable enough with a few true quality scares. And what many saying the third is the best in the series, I figured I’d enjoy this one quite a bit. Well the end result is rather positive. Continue Reading
