It seems that lately horror and thriller films have taken a turn to bloodying up the technological things we so often take for granted. From phones to internet connections; the things we so frequently use naively are intended to simplify life by enhancing our ability to communicate, however can be used for evil! While the concepts of such films in the past have completely lacked any sincerity in identifying our calamitous dependence for all things technology perhaps Elsewhere can provide some palpable social commentary. Based on the 1959 Richard Condon novel of the same name, and a re-make of the original 1962 film, The Manchurian Candidate boasts an impressive star line up including Denzel Washington, Liev Schreiber, Jon Voight, and Meryl Streep. The movie centers on the same basic plot as the original, but differs in many ways – offering many surprises for those of you who thought you knew how it would play out because you saw the original. Nicholas Cage plays Yuri Orlov, the anti-hero arms dealer and protagonist of Lord of War. Alongside him is brother Vitaly Orlov played by Jared Leto in an impressive role. Lord of War was released in the same year where political dramas flooded the market (Munich, Syriana, etc) and never got the credit it deserved.
The movie starts in the early 80′s where Yuri and his family came to the U.S from the Ukraine under rule of the Soviets. Continue Reading
