South Park – Fourteenth Season

South Park – Fourteenth Season

The Simpsons, to me, had at least 10 seasons of being the best cartoon (and sitcom) on television. By season 11 and 12, it show signs of straining but persevered to put out more solid comedy. By the 13th and 14th season, the magic had faded and mediocrity reigned meaning that South Park, with the release of season 14 as well as currently airing their 15th season, can take over as having more consistently hilarious seasons then those veritable cartoon comedy Gods, the Simpsons. Wild Wild West (1999)

Wild Wild West (1999)

Will Smith is one of the biggest entertainers on the planet. It is that sort of weight that only helps to bloat blockbuster films further than is comfortable. Wild Wild West is an overhaul of the original TV series of the same name and is about as bloated as they blockbusters come. Michael Bay, eat your heart out. Continue Reading

The Way Back

The Way Back

People often comment tome when they find out that I do some Blu-ray movie reviews that it must be great to be able to see all those films. Yes, it can be great to see the films, more times than not before they are available for sale. However, that can be a bit of a double edged sword in that for every really good film, I have to watch many terrible films as well. However, one benefit is the exposure I receive to smaller, less known films that would never have otherwise come to my attention that are fully worthy of a larger audience. One such film is the subject of this review, The Way Back. Continue Reading

Gnomeo & Juliet

Gnomeo & Juliet

It was only a few months ago that I would see these posters of garden gnomes all over the local mall advertising for the movie Gnomeo & Juliet. It seemed that they were everywhere, which is normally not a good sign for the ultimate success of the film. It didn’t take a Mensa member to figure out that the film was a take off on Romeo & Juliet, featuring the music of Elton John. However, the film was out of the local cineplex fairly soon due to mediocre box office results, which is not surprising given the short length of time it took for the film to make its way to home video. Nevertheless, the film seemed like an interesting concept so I decided to request a review copy, in 2D. Well, it has finally arrived as has my review. Continue Reading

I Am Number Four

I Am Number Four

When it comes to films produced by Michael Bay, I can’t say that I really expect all that much in the terms of quality. You know, a quality screenplay, quality dialogue and character development. There are plenty of quality special effects, CGI and wiz bang sound effects, but not that much else. If you have seen Transformers or even worse, Transformers 2, you know the score. I was therefore expecting more of the same when the subject of this review, I Am Number Four, showed up on my doorstep. While not directed by Michael Bay, would I Am Number Four follow the Michael Bay playbook? Continue Reading

Chaplin

Chaplin

Delivering a worthy portrayal as Charles Chaplin seems like an insurmountable task, but Robert Downey Jr. proved to be adroit and became the most talked about thing in Richard Attenborough’s film. Despite some critisisms that it skims over important parts of his life while focusing too long on others, this might be one of the best Hollywood Bio pics yet made. Continue Reading

An Education

An Education

An Education is a critical darling of the previous Oscar season that features a major breakout role for lead Carey Mulligan, who received no less than 24 major acting award nominations for her performance. More a loss-of-innocence story than coming-of-age (which it is sometimes marketed as), this makes for a great character film. Continue Reading

Jackass 3

Jackass 3

I was surprised when I saw Jackass 3 on store shelves when it wasn’t released in 3D, considering the industry is hoisting 3D up as a savior for staggering box office performances I would assume that they would try and take that same approach with home media release. I’m guessing they’re going to wait a while and release the 3D Blu-ray down the road… So is the film worthwhile without the extra dimension?

Bad Boys (1983)

Bad Boys (1983)

Bad Boys is one of the early Sean Penn films that may be a bit off your radar, it wasn’t a high profile film at the time and it seems to just have gotten plopped onto Blu-ray and released with little to no effort. Is this film a hidden gem or simply just another catalog release?

The Green Hornet

The Green Hornet

I have always found The Green Hornet to be the most overlooked of the comic book action heros and one that was in desperate need for an updating. Given the recent incredible (both commercially and artistically) of the Batman movie franchise, it seemed to me The Green Hornet would be a natural as the two heroes had a lot in common thematically, namely Super heroes that were not really “super” and who were misunderstood by the general public. However, as films, there is a huge difference. Batman had a genius behind the camera, Christopher Nolan, with a real vision about how to bring the comic book to life, whereas, The Green Hornet has Seth Rogan. Not exactly a fair fight! Still Waiting…

Still Waiting…

We didn’t ask for it, and yet we were still delivered another direct-to-video, fart-joke laced sequel. While attempting to cash in on the success of its predecessor, this one comes out half baked…or under-cooked, or whatever restaurant pun you wish to digest…just know that it’s a bad film! Taxi (2004)

Taxi (2004)

Some films are so bloated with an undeserving budget it’s sickening. Such is the case with Taxi, a loose remake of a French film of the same name. Somewhere amidst the many exploding cars, flying bullets and random bikini shots is a lifeless script trying to be resuscitated by a feeble cast. Abandon all hope… Continue Reading
