“Each year, over 21,000,000 people receive general anesthesia.  The vast majority go to sleep peacefully.  They remember nothing.  30,000 of these patients are not so fortunate.  They find themselves unable to sleep.  Trapped in a phenomenon known as anesthesia awareness.  These victims are completely paralyzed.  They cannot scream for help.  They are awake.”  [...]

Burn After Reading

Burn After Reading was written and directed by the Coen Brothers, Joel and Ethan. Do their names sound familiar to you? They should! The Coen Brothers walked away with the Oscar last year for No Country For Old Men. Burn After Reading features an all-star cast with such names as Brad Pitt, George Clooney, John Malkovich, J.K. Simmons, Frances McDormand and Tilda Swinton. The film opened up in the United States on September 12, 2008 to generally positive user reviews, but it received mixed critical reviews. [...]

Stuck Cover Art

When I first found out that I would be reviewing the Blu-ray movie, Stuck, I did some quick research on the web. After reading about the premise of the movie and how it was somewhat based on actual events, I was able to recall hearing the factual news story years ago. I remember being amazed and intrigued by what really happened. That is why I was really excited and looking forward to seeing what Stuck had to offer me. I went in with no hopes or expectations. I just wanted to be entertained and enthralled. [...]

The Happening

The Happening Cover Art

Not long since his last disappointing release, M. Night Shyamalan hopes to bring some credibility back to his once reputable name with The Happening. Plagued with accusations of plagiarism and labelled as a one trick pony, bringing some credibility back to the table wouldn’t be an easy feat for anyone. But we have to hand it to Shyamalan, The Sixth Sense and Signs are easily classics in their genres, I’ll even give The Village a nod. But on the flipside, out of six major releases, only two have really hit it big, bating at one third and barely making back it’s budget I’m not sure I like the odds going into this one. [...]

Perfect Stranger Cover Art

Here’s the thing. You’ve got Halle Berry. You’ve got Bruce Willis. How could you go wrong with a combination like that? I don’t know about the women, but the guys are all over this one. We get the cool action star and some nice eye candy. Add to that that both of them have some serious acting chops, and you have yourself a winner. The story has all kinds of potential. It’s a classic whodunit with some clever twists and turns along the way to keep you guessing. What could possibly go wrong. Perfect Stranger, that’s what can go wrong. [...]

Outbreak Coverart

There is nothing like a good epidemic or virus to scare the living heck out of you. It happens everyday. Turn on your local news and you’ll see stories about bird flu, salmonella, Mad Cow or killer bees. Sure, all of these things are out there but imagine a virus like the plague, in today’s environment, and you would have a huge panic. Well, in this Blu-ray review of Outbreak, a deadly virus is on the loose on US soil and it is up to Dustin Hoffman and his co-stars to save the day. [...]

Into the Blue

Inot the Blue Coverart

I am a sucker for a hot chick in a small bikini. I can also handle a handsome guy also appearing in the film, of course, with the eyes set solely on the bikini clad chick. Into The Blue has both and yet at the same time trying to give the viewer an interesting story. Thankfully, for Into the Blue, the story isn’t all that uninteresting. [...]

Untraceable Cover Art

There are so many movies that get released; sometimes people will question why they even get released in the first place. I know I have done it myself. In regards to this film, Untraceable, I am more than sure someone asked the same question. Given its negative reviews, it is hard to go into viewing the film with a positive opinion. However, that is why you should watch the film yourself and be the judge. [...]

Street Kings Cover Art

Woo… no one can be told exactly what The Matrix is…. oh oops… wrong movie. Ok so every time I see Keanu Reeves all I can ever picture is Neo and that damn Matrix, talk about a lasting role for an actor. But as you know The Matrix hasn’t hit Blu-ray yet, it’s coming in Oct, so today I will review one of Keanu’s other flicks, Street Kings on Blu. [...]

The Hunt for Red October

The Hunt for Red October Cover Art

This is the film that literally started a trend. Within a decade, submarine films would make a huge comeback in the big budget film industry. Titles like Crimson Tide, U-571, and K-19: The Widowmaker all took a little from Red October. Maybe the Cold War is over, but our fascination with that modern version of cowboys and Indians doesn’t seemed to have waned much in the last nearly 20 years. While our relationship with Russia might be up and down over the last two decades, there is still a part of our culture that can’t seem to let go of that classic game of good guys and bad guys. It’s not unique to the former Soviet Union by any means. [...]

The Sum of All Fears Cover Art

I can’t prove it. I don’t know exactly what it was, but I could swear that while I was watching this film there was a goose, or it could have been a duck, trying to sell me some kind of supplemental insurance. It might have been my enemy the backyard limpkin who finds it necessary to scream 24/7 while he litters my yard with huge snail shells. Whatever it was, it was distracting. Sum Of All Fears suffers from a multitude of sins, not the least of which is Ben Affleck. [...]

Patriot Games

Patriot Games Cover Art

It’s sad, really, when you think about it. The Hunt For Red October was a magnificent film, and it established a believable world and mythology that could well have launched Jack Ryan into a decades-long career as the American version of James Bond. All of the elements were established, as was a very workable cast of characters. But somewhere, somehow, something went terribly astray. Instead of giving us another international story of intrigue and global consequences, we’re left with a very pedestrian story about revenge. [...]

The Eye

The Eye was not a great movie but it’s not horrible either, it’s simply an average movie. In a growing trend of recent Japanese/Chinese horror remakes The Eye is actually one of the better. Released in 2008, the film stars Jessica Alba as Sydney Wells. It is a remake of the 2002 Hong Kong-Thai-Singaporean film of the same name, “Jian Gui,” which in my opinion is also the better of the two. Today I will review The Eye on Blu-ray. [...]

Urban Legend

Posted on 16. Jul, 2008 by Jamie Shuhyta.

An urban legend is a form of modern folklore consisting of stories thought to be factual by those circulating them. The term is often used to mean something akin to an “apocryphal story.” Like all folklore, urban legends are not necessarily false, but they are often distorted, exaggerated, or sensationalized over time. I Am Legend

Before I begin this review I should state I’m a huge fan, and I mean HUGE fan of Richard Matheson’s original novel by the same name…. I Am Legend. The reason I state this is my opinion on the film itself may vary from that of the average movie go-er, simply because in my mind nothing could ever compare. In case you also didn’t know this is the third time the novel has been adapted to film. The first time was The Last Man on Earth, starring Vincent Price, still the best version in my mind to date. The second attempt was the cult classic The Omega Man starring Charlton Heston, although major portions of the adaption were changed from the book. Finally we have are third version, reviewed today, I Am Legend. [...]

A Clockwork Orange Cover Art

Do you enjoy a little Beethoven with your ultraviolence? Stanley Kubrick’s controversial A Clockwork Orange has arrived on Blu-ray Hi-Def (as the TV adds now like to call our BD format). Often imitated, sometimes misunderstood, A Clockwork Orange is a classic no matter your opinion of the film. Personally, this isn’t my favorite Kubrick film (that would have to be 2001), but it’s essential viewing nevertheless. Whether you choose to view it on this Blu-ray might be another?story….

Unbreakable

Unbreakable Cover Art

I think that by revisiting Unbreakable, and looking at it outside of M. Night Shyamalan’s other films like The Sixth Sense and Signs, there’s actually a pretty good movie going on there. I mean, a movie that grossed $95 million domestically can’t be considered a failure, right? It did, however, do amazing overall numbers, the international totals brought the film up to a near $250 million gross. However, I guess when you put them up against Signs ($227 million domestic, $408 million worldwide) and The Sixth Sense ($293 million domestic, $672 million worldwide), maybe it can be considered disappointing, but the film itself is pretty good.
