Sometimes you have to kill to do good things. That statement from General Pang in a nutshell summarizes the film The Warlords that is the subject of today’s review. The Warlords was recently featured on HDNet and HDNet Movies and I was curious to see whether the Blu-ray release of the film would be a significant upgrade in terms of picture and sound quality over the prior cable presentation. There are some actors who are natural born bad guys, a real heavy, ones that just have that edginess that makes you believe that they are ready to step over the edge and do something very dangerous. I can’t say that I ever thought of Meg Ryan as that type of actress. However, that is the type of role she is cast in in the film that is the subject of today’s review, Serious Moonlight. Can she pull it off? Continue Reading

Premiering at the Toronto Film Festival in September 2008, Eden Log was met with mixed reviews as the directorial debut of co-writer Frank Vestiel. The film is dubbed as a futuristic science fiction film and is shot entirely with hand-held cameras. Originally distributed by Bac Films in France, Magnolia Pictures decided to give this French language film a release in North American release. I hadn’t heard much else about this film so naturally I was quite eager to check it out. Continue Reading

There have been plenty of great documentaries over the past few years. However, the one problem with documentaries is that they do have a particular point of view. Your reaction to a particular documentary will likely be dependent on that point of view and how you look at the world from both a political and social perspective. In other words, a documentary with a liberal bias, as most of them have, will not be looked on as favorably by someone who identifies themselves as a conservative as one who identifies themselves as a liberal. However, there are some documentaries which should shock and grab the attention of people across the entire political and social spectrum. Food, Inc. is just one of those documentaries. Every now and again a film comes along that is elegant in its simplicity. Even better yet, charming, witty and moving but not in a syrupy way. That reminds you that a movie need not be a blockbuster, filled with special effects galore and a mega cast to be a worthwhile film. One such film is the subject of today’s review. The Answer Man. The fairly new (to the big screen) British director Toby Wilkins brings us yet another low budget horror film, which to say the least has not been my cup of tea as of late. I can argue this a thousand times over but the blunt reality of the situation is horror is a dying breed, but a breed that I love nonetheless. Sure it’s been a long while since there has been a truly remarkable horror film but along the way there have been a few worth watching. Thus far I have heard nothing but decent things about Splinter, which is said to be one of the top horror films of 2008. With a cast of acceptable B-Listers including Paulo Costanzo and Jill Wagner we can only hope for some decent thrills and chills with Splinter. Continue Reading

Let me first say that I love Godzilla and I love monster movies. The Host is a South Korean film that has received much critical acclaim for the return of the giant monster. With many comparisons to both the Godzilla movies and Jaws, to say that I was looking forward to watching this would be an understatement. Yet, when all was said and done, I was left, like the monster, a little cold. Maybe I had just bought into the hype a little too much. Continue Reading

Another independent film release by Magnolia, The War Within appears to have more potential then the past independent releases I have reviewed. Critically acclaimed and nominee of several independent film awards, The War Within appears to be promising. Continue Reading

Dylan is a high school student who is terminally ill and is invited to a television show, which grants a final wish to dying people. Initially he is to announce his pre-selected wish of spending a day fishing with football star Jason O’Malley (Johnny Messner), but at the last minute he shocks everyone by announcing that he would like to spend a weekend alone with supermodel Nikki Sinclair (Sunny Mabrey). Nikki hears about this wish via her agent (Gina Gershon) who suggests that she visit Dylan to gain some much-needed public relation points. Reluctant at first, she eventually decides to visit albeit very brief and ultimately disappointing to Dylan. Continue Reading

A low budget independent film based on a play also called The Architect, the movie stars Anthony LaPaglia, Viola Davis, and Hayden Panettiere. Although there are several underlying themes and battles, the main plot of the film is the conflict of an architect with an activist. The activist, Tonya Neeley (Viola Davis), wishes to have her complex torn down due to its escalating levels of violence and danger, which leads her to find the endorsing signature to tear down the buildings from the man who designed it, Leo Waters (Anthony LaPaglia). Let’s start this review off with a little equation…
E!’s Wild On (- the storyline) + a late night adult infomercial (- clothes) = Bikini Destination
This show, and HDNet original program, is quite useless… in a beautiful kind of way. Bikini Destination places some of the most beautiful swimsuit models (often minus the swimsuits) in some of the world’s most beautiful locals. We get some interview type information about the models, but for the most part, this show is all about eye candy. Continue Reading
