The Diplomat

The Diplomat

When I see movies that look similar to The Diplomat on the shelves of the video store, I always smile and contemplate renting it for the heck of it and getting a good laugh at the over-the-top violence and lame dialogue. I find that mindless action films are nourishing to one’s soul, especially when you invite some friends over to help enjoy the film. How’d The Diplomat turn out?

Clerks II

Clerks II

Politically incorrect, foul-mouthed, heartless, loving, pot-smoking, drug-peddling, hard working, not working, frustrated, argumentative, thought-provoking, humorous, angry, coming of age movie.  That is Clerks II in a nutshell.  But before all that, I think the biggest surprise a few years ago was, “They’re making another one??”  I did enjoy the first film for its originality and delivery.  For those who haven’t seen the original Clerks, give it a go.  Though you won’t find it on any blockbuster income stats sheet, it is one of those small films with a tremendous following.  Who can forget Randal’s argument over how realistic it was to build the Death Star and the loss of life incurred from the Rebel attack?  But, here we are in 2009 as Clerks II makes its way to the Blu-ray format…this time in full color and with a bigger budget.  The usual suspects return to reprise their roles as we once again visit the lives of Randal, Dante and of course, everyone’s favorites, Jay and Silent Bob.  Did I mention the addition of Rosario Dawson to the cast? Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

It sounds really simple right?  I mean…make a porno, make millions.  Right?  Well, like most things in life, the things that seem too good to be true usually are.  I bet you never thought about the human psyche, and what filming a porno could do to one’s mentality.  Then there are the monetary aspects of filmmaking such as casting, set locations, props, crew wages, distribution rights and more.  Yep, that’s right.  I put a lot of thought into this and filming a porno movie is more complicated than I ever thought it could be.  Let’s not forget about the legalities involved too.  And what if the film stars two best friends, who just happen to be members of the opposite gender and are deniably in love with each other, and their first time having sex will be on display for everyone to see.  Do you think that could complicate things a bit between them?  Oh…and did I mention this movie is a comedy too?  Zack and Miri Make a Porno is my first Kevin Smith film I have ever seen and I am pleased to report it is a crowd pleaser! Soul Men

Soul Men

Soul Men is director Malcolm D. Lee’s fifth feature film and succeeds such titles as The Best Man, Roll Bounce, Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins, and the better of the aforementioned titles, Undercover Brother. While I didn’t mind the ladder, I have little anticipation for Soul Men having taken in just over twelve millions in the box office, and initially met with mixed reviews. Continue Reading
