Sharkwater
Posted on 22. Dec, 2008 by Gregg Senko.
Captain Planet. That’s what some of my coworkers call me as I’m always on the lookout for discarded plastic bottles and aluminum cans that others throw away when the recycling bin is but a few steps farther. Yup, champion of the environment. That’s me. So when I came across a documentary earlier this year about sharks, I was ecstatic. To see sharks in their natural habitat in high definition would be a wonderful thing. Without further ado, I made my online purchase of the film known as Sharkwater. [...]

Stranger Than Fiction (Special Edition)
Posted on 21. Dec, 2008 by Kristina Kehler.
Like most of you, I have come to expect Will Ferrell in stupid comedy movies that no matter how ridiculous, will always be a guilty pleasure to watch. With Stranger than Fiction Marc Foster (Monsters Ball) broadens the horizon a bit, with a sweet and innocent take on a rather grim premise. The real question is can Will Ferrell escape the shackles of type casting and deliver a movie with feeling? [...]

Jules Verne is perhaps the most sought after writer of Science Fiction, and is undeniably the father of the genre. I am still shocked that more of his writings haven’t made it to the big screen, perhaps the apperception of his stories have been lost in the generations. Back then Verne was writing about things like the internet and air conditioning, of course they were leaps and bounds away, but now being commonplace I really find it hard to dub his writings as Science Fiction. [...]

Mortuary

Did you ever want to like a movie so bad but you just couldn’t find one good reason to like it? That pretty much sums up how I feel about the 2005 film Mortuary. I must admit I was pretty excited when I pulled the Mortuary Blu-ray out of my mailbox, sent to my attention for review. I am quite the sucker for advertising, artwork and hype. The cover art on the Mortuary Blu-ray case just screams out that it is a movie I must love. Unfortunately, that just is not the case. [...]

The Woods Have Eyes

I get my kicks watching horror films; from spine chillers to hack and slashes I’ve loved them and hated them alike. Sure I find it extremely hard to debate that they make horror films like they used to, but even in a market flooded with teenagers getting murdered I have found some gems amidst the depths of crap. What I hope you take from that preamble is that I love horror films low budget teen thrillers and classics alike, and like any respectable reviewer am unbiased towards what might be preconceived as a horrible movie. Now I’ll just cut to the chase, I say all this so that when you read on and learn just how much I hated this movie you will understand that I speak with the outmost sincerity. [...]

The Omen Collection
Posted on 28. Oct, 2008 by Kristina Kehler.

Looking back over the last twenty or even thirty years of horror films, we’ve been on a downward slope with the occasional spike of decency. In a market filled with remakes, blood and guts, and redundancy, there’s a bit of solace thinking back on movies like The Omen. An undeniable favorite in the Christian end times corner of the horror universe. Packaged along with Richard Donner’s classic are two sequels and a remake, will they follow the overall downward trend? Or are we going to see a spike, maybe even a spark in inventive and horrific film making? [...]

RV

A family travels across the United States in an RV. Along the way they encounter all sorts of mishaps and adventures. From that short synopsis you might think I was describing the hilarious National Lampoon’s Vacation film with Chevy Chase. Unfortunately I’m not. Robin Williams, who is arguably one of the funniest comedic actors of all time, isn’t being very particular where he gets his film material from these days. In fact, I expected more out of Barry Sonnenfeld as well. When you team creative people of that caliber, you just have a right to expect more than a decidedly unfunny ripoff of a classic comedy film. Williams is certainly capable of better humor than Chevy Chase. He’s got so much more energy and delivery. Sonnenfeld is the genius who gave us things like Men In Black and the recent wickedly funny series, Pushing Daisies. Of course, he also brought us the disaster that was the Will Smith Wild Wild West film in the 90’s, so maybe we don’t have so much of a right to expect more after all. [...]

Me, Myself & Irene

I have seen just about every Jim Carrey comedy that has come out in the theaters and most of them I found pretty downright funny as hell. Working with the Farrelly Brothers for the first time since Dumb and Dumber, Jim Carrey is hoping to strike gold once again. Sadly, Me, Myself & Irene falls short.

The Sand Pebbles

For anyone who has read my reviews know, I am not a big fan of the classics.
It is just the way I am. But when I received The Sand Pebbles to watch and review, my interest was definitely peaked given what I had heard about the film. This was my first opportunity to watch a film with famed actor Steve McQueen, as well as world renowned actor and narrator, Richard Attenborough. I was very excited to see what all the talk was about.

I give credit to Paul Anderson for being passionate about his material. It doesn’t hurt that, in his short-storied career, he’s directed some of the more memorable films over the last several years, including Daniel Day Lewis in the engrossing and excellent There Will Be Blood. Wait, this isn’t the dramatic director, it’s another guy? Well, OK.

Space Ace

When Space Ace showed up on my doorstep, I kicked me heels in a fit of joy. OK, maybe I’m not athletic enough to actually do that anymore, but you get the point. I had seen the previous Dragon’s Lair Blu-ray/HD DVD release and was very curious about the quality, but never took the plunge myself. This was probably due to all of the mediocre PC and console releases I’ve seen and played over the years which had left *mostly* a bad taste in my gaming mouth. But I had high hopes for Space Ace and I am more than pleased with the results.

Artie Lange’s Beer League
Posted on 23. Apr, 2008 by Bill Geiger.

Let’s be clear about one thing up front. Any movie that stars and is written by Artie Lange is most likely not going to be everyone’s cup of coffee. Anyone who has listened to The Howard Stern Show knows who Artie Lange is and will most likely be the ones interested in watching Beer League. When I sat down to watch the Beer League Blu-ray for the first time, I went into it with an open mind. I expected nothing. I had heard and read people’s opinion of the movie, but wanted to be the judge for myself. Truly, it is not as bad as some would think. [...]

A Few Good Men
Posted on 25. Sep, 2007 by Gary Van Auken.

![]()
For those of you who don’t know, A Few Good Men revolves around the case of two marines who are charged with murder of another marine in their platoon on an army base in Cuba. The victim was a sub-par marine who wanted off the base so badly he was willing to rat out one of his fellow marines about an illegal fence line shooting. The base is run by a hard nose Colonel (Jack Nicholson) who prefers things to be handled from within. The case is being handled by a couple of inexperienced lawyers played by Tom Cruise and Demi Moore, in hope that the trial never sees the inside of the court room. At first, the trial seems to be nothing more than a case that can be plea bargained, until they start digging and realize it goes much deeper than that.

Weeds - Season One

Generally I don’t watch much on television, Weeds isn’t an exception but I will admit that having seen previews for it in the past, it did look rather interesting. Even though the biggest name I recognize from the cast list is Kevin Nealon, this dark comedy about marijuana and life in the suburbs looks to be promising. [...]

Happily N’Ever After

At one time or another we have all heard a story from the Brothers Grimm, two Germans who are credited with publishing a multitude of classic fairy tales. Their works include Cinderella, Snow White, Hansel and Gretel, Rumpelstiltskin, and Red Riding Hood. All of these and more Grimm tales are the focus of Happily N’Ever After. Going in, I knew very little about this movie, other than how poorly it did in the theatre, and how it was panned by critics; nothing positive. Being a long-time fan of CGI movies, I won… [...]

The Ultimate Avengers Collection on Blu-ray consists of the two direct-to-video animated films based upon the Marvel comic book The Ultimates. For those not familiar with the comic book, I’m sure you will have heard of more than one of the films’ main characters: Captain America, Thor, Iron Man and The Hulk, to name a few. [...]

Failure to Launch

I will admit that on occasion I have enjoyed a romantic comedy or two, and when I initially saw the trailer for Failure to Launch, I anticipated it to make the list. Aside from the film’s stars Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew McConaughey, Failure to Launch has a rather well assembled list of co-stars, including Kathy Bates (Misery), Terry Bradshaw (Former NFL Quarterback), Justin Bartha (National Treasure), and Bradley Cooper (Wedding Crashers). Sounds good enough, how does it turn out? [...]
