Blow

Blow

Cocaine was the drug du jour in the early eighties, and as stated in this film, if you did some during this time in the United States, there was an 85% chance it came from George Jung’s smuggling. This film chronicles the life of George Jung, as played by Johnny Depp, from his childhood, through his rise as millionaire drug smuggler, to his latest incarceration. Like many drug films, this one rides a fine line between glamorizing the lifestyle and depicting the horrible consequences of it. Continue Reading

Batman Begins (Limited Edition Canadian Steelbook)

Batman Begins (Limited Edition Canadian Steelbook)

Warner Home Video in Canada is releasing Wave II of their Limited Edition Steelbooks (available exclusively through Futureshop).  The first of five releases is Batman Begins (also being released are Goodfellas, Heat, 2001 & The Matrix).  While the differences between this release and the previously released version are slight (same A/V specs with only three new “additional footage” special features), it is the Steelbook packaging (with slick cover art) that makes this release stand out.   Most of this review will be ported over from our original review of Batman Begins (written by Brian White), with the new features highlighted for easy finding. The Kids are All Right

The Kids are All Right

With The Kids are All Right winning the Golden Globe for Best comedy, the film was definitely moved to the top of my “must watch soon” list and upon seeing the many awards this film has been collecting my expectations were raised accordingly. With a very edgy premise and an ensemble cast of great actors it begs the question… Does the film live up to all of this?

Highlander / Highlander 2

Highlander / Highlander 2

If you’ve seen Talladega Nights with Will Ferrell you may recall a scene in which Ricky Bobby (Ferrell) makes reference to Highlander and talks about it winning the academy award for “The Best Movie Ever”.  Also having a brother whom is a huge fan of the films, I was excited to sit down and watch this movie with him and see Sean Connery in his hay day. Does the film hold up to time and does it deserve that fictional Oscar?

Human Target – The Compete First Season

Human Target – The Compete First Season

Human Target brings to life the comic book character Christopher Chance. Living in San Francisco Christopher works as a kind of private bodyguard who protects whoever hires him. He completely immerses himself into the lives of his clients, effectively becoming a “Human Target.” Recently the show has been picked up by FOX for a second season which began airing in November, 2010. Prior to this review I haven’t watched the show, but have always been intrigued by its premise. Continue Reading

Lottery Ticket

Lottery Ticket

Lottery Ticket is brought to us by Erik White who has in the past primarily done music videos, this in fact being his first jaunt onto the big screen. While I’m not particularly a fan of anyone in this movie the previews I’ve seen for it appear decent. Will Lottery Ticket be a diamond in the rough, or a bust? Continue Reading

Going the Distance

Going the Distance

Romantic comedies are always hit and miss; there is rarely a perfect combination of laughter and believable romance. While the genre seems to be fading away in terms of quality there have been a few winners over the year, but ultimately I just see them as comedies now. While I never was interested in seeing this film in its theatrical run I am looking forward to it now. Casted with Justin Long (Waiting, Live Free or Die Hard) and Drew Berrymore (Whip It, Fever Pitch) it definitely has potential to be a funny movie in that quirky kind of way. Backing them up are Kristina Applegate, Jason Sudeikis, Charlie Day, and Ron Livingston. So will Going the Distance go the distance? Let’s find out. Continue Reading

Altitude

Altitude

When I looked at the cover of Altitude and immediately laughed at all the little details in the cover, not only is the plane seem out of control but some sort of Lost-esque smoke monster is reaching for the plane… and on closer inspection someone is dangling from a door on the plane. It’s clear that even though I’ve never heard of this movie before I had a very good idea as to what I was in store for… Was I right?

Inception

Inception

Too much of the faire coming out of Hollywood these days is either low brow dreck or material that has been done before (and often better) that has been recycled yet again. That doesn’t even include the ever growing number of sequels. Even films that don’t exactly do well at the box office seem to get sequels, due in part to the dearth of new ideas floating around Hollywood. It is rare that a film is released that is so original and so compelling that is stands uniquely alone. Such a film is Christopher Nolan’s Inception, which is making its Blu-ray debut on December 7th. Continue Reading

Jonah Hex

Jonah Hex

Most men love their Westerns. On the other hand, most women tend to get upset when they lose the bet and as a result are stuck watching a Western. That being said, I fall into the later group, so the thought of watching Jonah Hex was a little daunting. I have however in the past liked comic adaptations such as Superman, The Hulk and Iron Man and I am happy to report that this comic book turned movie was also very entertaining.

Poltergeist

Poltergeist

Arguably one of the most iconic films in the horror genre, Poltergeist now nearly 30 years old, is filled with numerous recognizable and often parodied scenes. Poltergeist has since been made into a trilogy of films and a remake is currently in talks; but let’s face it nothing has or will come close to competing with the original. Directed by Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and produced by Steven Spielberg, Poltergeist was nominated for 3 Academy Awards in 1982; a rare feat for a horror film. But not all good has come from this film, as much of the current day press around the film comes in form of The “Poltergeist Curse.” The curse surrounding the film has supposedly taken the lives of four cast members; aged as young as 12 years old. One murdered, the rest taken by illness it is unclear to me the reality of this curse but one thing is for sure; it surely has added to the already spooky aura around the film. Continue Reading

Lost Boys: The Thirst

Lost Boys: The Thirst

Remember Lost Boys? The cult teen horror film directed by Joel Shumacher… Of course it’s a seminal work that is a staple of the 80’s teen horror genre. How about the sequel, Lost Boys: The Tribe? If you haven’t then it may be a surprise to you that there’s a third film, The Lost Boys: The Thirst filling in the trilogy. How does it hold up against the classic?  Continue Reading
